Medicare EPC Referrals

How Do EPC Referrals Work?
If you’re asking yourself this question, there’s a good chance you’ve just stepped out of your doctor’s office after being told they’ve put you on an EPC plan through Medicare. This is typically because you’re experiencing a chronic condition that requires physiotherapy treatment, podiatry treatment or something similar.
In Australia, Medicare EPC referrals are a way for doctors to recommend other specialists to their patients. This can be a great way to get the care that you need, but it can also be a little confusing if you’re not sure how it all works. Here’s a quick guide to Medicare EPC referrals in Australia.

What is a Medicare EPC plan?
EPC stands for Enhanced Primary Care, and it’s a referral system that allows patients to see specialists without having to pay the full fee. Instead, the Australian Government subsidises a portion of the cost, making it more affordable for everyone involved.
To be eligible for a Medicare EPC referral, your GP will need to assess your needs and determine that you would benefit from seeing a specialist, such as a podiatrist, occupational therapist or even a speech therapist. If they believe you would indeed benefit from this, they’ll write out a referral and give it to you. You’ll then take this referral to the specialist, who will bulk bill Medicare for the consultation.
One of the great things about EPC referrals is that you can use them to see any specialist who participates in the scheme. This means that you’re not limited to just your GP’s referrals – you can ask for a referral to any number of Medicare-accredited specialists, including In One Healthcare.

Some additional information about Medicare EPC referrals
It’s worth noting that not all specialists participate in the EPC scheme, so it’s always best to check with your chosen specialist beforehand to make sure they do. If they don’t, you may still be able to see them, but you’ll probably have to pay the full fee.
All in all, Medicare EPC referrals are a great way to get the care you need at a more affordable price. If you think you might benefit from seeing a specialist, talk to your GP about getting a referral for In One Healthcare’s physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry or speech therapy services today.
